Yachtfinders Global and Swashbucklers Restaurant have been part of Auckland’s waterfront story for the same amount of time — 28 years.
Swashbucklers was founded by the legendary Ginger Gibbs, who, as it happens, went to St Paul’s College at the same time I did. Ginger was one of a kind — a fun, kind-hearted character who could light up a room and a harbour in equal measure.

It’s no surprise that Swashbucklers became such an enduring part of Auckland life. The menu hasn’t changed much over the years — and I hope it never does. Like The White Lady, it’s an institution; a place where locals and visitors alike feel instantly at home.
I’m glad I went down for their birthday celebration. Funnily enough, a few of Ginger’s old schoolmates held their birthday party there just a few months ago — proof that some traditions never fade.
And that Tasman crossing record from Sydney Harbour Bridge to Auckland Harbour Bridge? Classic Ginger. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still whispered about in boating circles today.
Swashbucklers, like Yachtfinders Global, have weathered the tides of time — two parallel stories built on connection, character, and community. Here’s to the next 28 years of adventure on and off the water.
And come on down to Swashbucklers on Friday, 31st October, for our annual Halloween Party! Enjoy a frightfully fun night on the waterfront with spooky vibes, great tunes, and plenty of laughs. Dress to impress (or terrify!) for your chance to win best costume prizes.
Delicious drinks, top music, and Auckland’s best waterfront atmosphere — all at Swashbucklers Seafood Restaurant & Bar, where the sea meets the spooky!
