Change and Continuity in the Yacht Brokerage Industry

Insights from Yachtfinders Global – New Zealand’s Oldest Brokerage

And now another year navigating change in the yacht brokerage world…

As we look ahead to another year, those of us at Yachtfinders Global, New Zealand’s oldest yacht brokerage, find ourselves reflecting on the remarkable changes that have swept through our industry. Over the decades, we have weathered economic ups and downs, adapted to technological revolutions, and watched the global yacht market undergo profound transformation. While changes are sure to continue, our commitment to our clients and our passion for boating endure.

Adapting to Technological Advancements

When I first began brokering yachts, the process was unrecognisable compared to today. Photos of boats were taken on film cameras, and we would wait days for them to be developed before sharing them with prospective buyers. Now, in an era of instant digital communication, listings are crafted with high-resolution images and videos, and deals can be negotiated from anywhere in the world. The pace of change is relentless, but by embracing new technologies, Yachtfinders Global has stayed ahead of the curve.

Quality Versus Cost: Shifts in Boat Manufacturing

One significant trend we have observed is the evolution in boat manufacturing. Many boatyards, under economic pressure, are seeking ways to reduce costs. Unfortunately, this often translates to shortcuts in production, which can lead to a decline in build quality. While cost-effectiveness is essential, our experience shows that actual value lies in quality and longevity. We are fortunate at Yacht Finders Global to represent some of the world’s most respected brands—boats that consistently meet the high expectations of our clients.

The way people use their boats is also changing. Time pressures and busy lifestyles mean that, for many owners, a yacht is more often enjoyed as a couple than as a family. Despite best intentions and the hope that children or friends will join, the reality is that schedules rarely align. It’s not uncommon for a boat purchased with dreams of bustling family outings to be most often sailed by just two people. This shift is global—our colleagues overseas report similar experiences.

These changes are not unique to New Zealand. Conversations with fellow brokers around the world reveal the same trends: shifting customer expectations, rapid technological change, and a new emphasis on quality over affordability. Despite the challenges, the core appeal of boating remains unchanged. Getting out on the water is still one of life’s most rewarding forms of relaxation.

As we move into another year, we do so with optimism, realism, and gratitude. The yacht market will continue to evolve, and so will we. Our experience has taught us that success lies in adaptability, integrity, and a deep respect for both our clients and the boats we represent. Whatever the future holds, the allure of the sea and the joy of boating will remain constants, reminding us why we do what we do.
