Outside New Zealand, “launch” is never used to mean a private motor yacht. In most of the world, a launch means a workboat, tender, open powerboat, or ferry, not a pleasure cruiser.
- NZ: “Launch” = recreational motor yacht (unique usage).
- UK/US: “Launch” = small open powerboat or utility boat.
- India/Bangladesh: “Launch” = river ferry.
- Naval tradition: “Launch” = ship’s boat.
In essence, power boats overseas are commonly called “motor yachts” and the word “launch” is rarely heard.
