A Chance Encounter with the Voice of New Zealand Sailing – Pete Montgomery!

Last week a customer wandered into our Westhaven office to purchase some of our Semco teak care products – and the moment we started talking, I thought, I know that voice…

“You’re Peter Montgomery, aren’t you?” I said instantly!

That simple question led to an incredible chat about the glory days of the America’s Cup.

We talked about Perth in 1987, when New Zealand first challenged for the Cup. I was there, he was there, and he was already the unmistakable voice behind some of our biggest sailing moments. Hearing him reflect on those days was like stepping straight back into one of the most iconic eras in New Zealand sport.

We also talked about how winning the America’s Cup reshaped our national identity – how it became something many of us still think of as “the New Zealand Cup.” A moment of unity, pride, and absolute belief in what Kiwis can achieve.

It’s not every day you get to relive those memories with someone who helped narrate them for the whole country. A pretty special moment.
